Ask the Dietitian Free Service

Do you have a nutrition-related question? A Registered Dietitian is the best source for answers regarding nutrition. Simply submit your question below and you will receive an answer by email shortly! If you have questions related to diet/calorie prescriptions (i.e. "How many calories should I eat?"), please see our other eNutrition programs below for more in-depth nutritional guidance. Below are some sample questions asked by visitors to the website and responses from Karen Kelly, MPH, RD.

Q: How much fiber does an adult need in one day?
A: Adults should get 25-35 grams of fiber a day. Most Americans do not hit that goal. Your best sources are whole grains, fruits and vegetables. My recommendation would be to start your day off with a high-fiber cereal. This is a great jump on your 25 grams a day!

Q: What is the vitamin that will help me with iron absorption?
A: The RDA for iron for adult men is 10 mg a day and 15 mg for women to age 50 (and back down to 10 mg for women over 50). Vitamin C is the nutrient that helps with iron absorption. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, melons, peppers, dark green leafy vegetables, potatoes and tomatoes. Good sources of iron are red meat, other meats, fortified breakfast cereals, spinach, and dry beans. For example, to maximize absorption, it would be a good idea to have a peanut butter sandwich with a glass of orange juice.

Q: How can I get my 3-year old to eat a better variety of healthy foods?
A: My best recommendation would be to still offer the foods that you wish her to eat. Yes, you may waste food, but you'd be surprised how all of the sudden, they are open to the idea. If you aren't offering it, you have no chance of that. Serving foods in different ways (with a dip, cut in different shapes or sizes, all in little bowls) may spark interest enough to try foods again. And getting your child involved in any choice or food preparation can only help as well! Of course, setting a good example is vital.

Here is a book recommendation for you: Healthy Foods, Healthy Kids by Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD. Adams Media Corporation, 2002. Practical eating suggestions for parents of kids from birth to age six, this book gives practical tips and simple solutions to parents' nutrition concerns.
