Diabetes Management

Diabetes can be controlled permanently through proper nutrition and exercise. Mettler's Diabetes Management Program is designed to help participants make lifestyle changes in a safe and gradual program. By working closely with a personal trainer and a registered dietitian, participants learn to eat better, exercise safely, and experience the enjoyment of a healthy lifestyle. This five week program entails screening by a physical therapist, counseling with a Registered Dietitian, and individualized training with a medical exercise specialist. Our physical therapist will educate you on proper foot care and evaluate any other structural predispositions that may be present. Our Registered Dietitian will help guide you to a healthier and more stable glucose level. A specific exercise program will be designed by your medical exercise specialist. The ongoing support, education, and motivation in the Diabetes Management program are the essential components to long-term success.

Fitness RX

Fitness RX is a program comprised of medically-based exercise for those with special conditions. This program is designed for individuals that need close monitoring by a Registered Dietitian and medical exercise specialist. The four week program includes two weekly training sessions with an exercise specialist and counseling with a Registered Dietitian. Goal planning, education, and assessments are also provided. Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis are a few of the conditions that can be improved through the Fitness RX program. At the end of the program you will be ready to safely and confidently exercise and practice healthy habits independently.

The Fitness RX program includes:

  • A pre- and post- fitness assessment
  • Physical Therapy consultation
  • Bi-weekly personal training and goal-setting sessions
  • Pre- and post- program nutrition consultations
  • A Mettler Progress Log

Cancer Wellness Program

This four week nutrition and exercise program provides patient’s with a supervised exercise program and a cancer-specific nutrition plan aimed at decreasing fatigue and improving quality of life. Cancer patient’s work with Mettler’s Medical Fitness Team of Registered Dietitian, physical therapist and medical exercise specialists to improve their joint range of motion, strength, aerobic capacity, and mental health.

What is the difference Diabetes and impaired fasting glucose?

Diabetes is diagnosed when fasting glucose levels are greater than 125 mg/dl on more than one occasion. Impaired fasting glucose is diagnosed when fasting blood glucose levels are 100-125 mg/dl on more than one occasion. It is very important to get an annual fasting blood test if you have a family history of diabetes.

What are signs or symptoms of Diabetes?

Excessive thirst, urination, and hunger are some of the symptoms of diabetes along with extreme weight loss and fatigue.

Can someone with Diabetes exercise?

Exercise is a crucial component in managing diabetes, along with healthy nutrition and medication. Prior to beginning an exercise program, it is recommended that all Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes undergo a maximal treadmill exercise test. This is typically called a stress test and can be done by a qualified physician. Our medical fitness staff has experience in exercise programming for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics.

Can someone with Arthritis exercise?

Yes, and many do. There are approximately 37 million Americans with arthritis today and many are active. Regular exercise is extremely important in controlling some of the symptoms of arthritis. Proper exercise helps keep joints flexible, build and preserve muscle strength, and protect joints from further stress. Our medical fitness specialists and physical therapist can determine the specific exercise program for each individual depending on the type and severity of the arthritis.
